Changing Perspectives

Well it’s been over 3 months since my last entry.  What a whirlwind it has been!  I finished another term at school and my May 10th graduation is officially in my sights.  My sister Aileen got married on November 29th, which feels like yesterday, and so my whole family spent several days over Thanksgiving weekend in Chicago celebrating and catching up with each other (so much fun!).  My brother-in-law and his wife had their daughter, making me now the proud uncle of 4 nephews and 1 niece!  Also, Anissa and I have been feverishly preparing for Christmas by decorating the house, putting up Christmas lights, buying presents, and busting our behinds at work to make sure we have nothing to carry over into our time off.  While I have not been posting as regularly as I’d like, I have been working on some thoughts for this entry for a while.  I have been reflecting on how many important things have happened this year.  It made me think about how our point of view on certain things changes over time.  So I thought I would share some examples of how my perspective has changed over time.

Speed Limit:  Learning to drive can be pretty exciting stuff, especially once you get comfortable with where you are going.  At a certain point, I think most youth (including myself) just sort of lost sight of speed limits and simply drove as fast as they wanted.  There was no speed limit high enough to satisfy me!  But now, as an adult, I cannot stand the “speedsters” out there who tailgate unnecessarily, pass on the right, and try to go 20+ mph over the limit.  In my “old age” I am all about setting that cruise control and maintaining a safe stopping distance!

Age:  It’s funny how your perspective of “old” changes over time.  I think I am finally starting to understand what people mean when they say you are only as old as you feel.  I will be turning 30 next year, but I feel younger than that so who really cares what my age is.  This year I have also become acutely aware of how ignorant I am about babies.  How old before solid foods?  When do they start talking?  How much should they sleep each day?  How much can they eat/drink?  Life really is a journey, huh?

Sleep:  My life has been a roller-coaster when it comes to sleep.  When I was in preschool and kindergarten, I would get anxious about being late to school so I would get up in the middle of the night and put on my school clothes and backpack, and go back to sleep.  I may also be the only 4-year-old in history who demanded an alarm clock.  I wanted to be prepared!  Later in my school career I would wake myself up a little before 6am to make sure I caught “Sonic the Hedgehog” with my sister.  Sometimes we would even get up earlier than that to squeeze in extra practice on the Nintendo.  In high school, I developed a terrible habit of staying up to watch Seinfeld which ended just after midnight.  We left for school at 6:15am so I was not sleeping a lot those years.  Maybe that’s why I would come home from school and fall asleep watching “The Closing Bell” with Maria Bartiromo (#loser).  Perhaps all of these sleep-depriving habits drove me to my next phase.  No amount of sleep could satisfy me in college.  I was in the honors program at Miami which meant I got priority scheduling.  This meant I could avoid the early classes and also strategically plan my classes to allow for afternoon naps.  This was also when I became notorious for sleeping in on the weekends until 11am or noon (and yes, I was still napping too!).  Now, in my real adult life, I feel energetic and alive when I can manage 7 hours of sleep.  However, most days it’s more like 5 or 6.  I tried to sleep in this weekend but couldn’t make it more than 8 hours.  Funny how things change :P

Food and Gas:  Thinking back to the times I would go out to eat with my friends in middle school or high school, it’s funny how my perspective has changed.  I used to be outraged at how I had to spend $6 at the mall food court to get a pepsi and some Sbarro pizza.  Now I can’t get out of Panera without dropping $10 or more.  I would get annoyed at Applebee’s when I had to pay $2 for my fountain drink on top of my food cost – oh, and what’s this whole concept of a tip!?  Gas is another funny thing.  In high school I was sharing the cost of gasoline with my sisters.  I usually had to pay for 1 fill-up per month.  At $1.19/gallon it usually took around $12 to fill up the car.  This would wipe me out for that week – life was rough!  Little did I know that I’d be battling to make ends meet with my first job out of college balancing $4.25/gallon gas with a long commute.  Now that gas has moderated again, I almost don’t even pay attention when I fill up my car.  I get what I can in fuel perks and consider it a necessary evil.

Wages:  My first hourly job was in guest services (later food services) at the Columbus Zoo.  It was a great job – the zoo was always busiest when I was on break from school.  My first summer there I got paid $5.25/hour.  After withholdings I was not making a whole lot.  But that tiny wage at 40-50 hours per week was enough to make me feel “rich”.  Suddenly I could afford 2 pieces of pizza at Sbarro – yum!  Over the course of many summers and winters at the zoo I became a team leader and started making some good money.  Combine that with plenty of overtime hours (sometimes pushing 70 hours per week) and I was a happy camper.  My final summer there I worked at the zoo’s golf course (again, in food service) and made more than $10/hour plus tips on league nights.  Now I really felt rich!  During school years at Miami I worked at the bookstore.  Back to $5.25/hour!  But this job came with free books – so worth it!  To be honest, working at the zoo was a great experience.  It taught me accountability, money management, time management, and the value of good old-fashioned manual labor.  Too bad in my adult life overtime is no longer “time and a half”!

Church:  Warning – short rant forthcoming!  Remember when church felt like an eternity?  Now, I don’t really even notice how long church is.  And it amazes me when people complain about how “long” a Catholic wedding ceremony takes.  You’re an adult.  It’s only an hour.  Get over it.  (#stepsoffpedestal #sorryiamnotsorry)

School Papers:  Throughout my education I generally hated writing papers.  Research was boring to me.  I’d rather solve some math problems.  I never knew what to write.  What do you mean this needs to be 5-7 pages?  What could I possibly have to say for that long?!  Now, as I am getting my masters, I can’t seem to shut up.  I have had no problem filling up 20 or more pages on a short Sunday afternoon.  Recently I had an assignment that limited me to 5 pages double-spaced.  That was a real challenge!  I’m not sure what changed between high school/college and now, but apparently I have a lot to say J

The list of changing perspectives could go on and on.  But it’s fun to reflect on how my lift has evolved and how what was normal is now totally different.  What has changed for you?

My Week in Review

I’ve had this most recent week on my radar for a while, knowing it was going to be challenging.  It was the last week of the current term at school (“exam week” which is a misnomer since it’s mostly papers and presentations that are due) and work has been picking up lately.  So let me recap for you what I accomplished this week, and what’s on tap for the weekend which is keeping me going this early Friday evening.

·         This week I completed the following for school:

o   3 group papers for a total of 45 pages that were compiled in coordination with 13 other group members.  Refer to my entry on September 8th (here for my feelings on the group work in my program.

o   2 presentations consisting of 40 minutes of presenting and 20 minutes of Q&A with the audience.

o   1 final exam consisting of 10 1-page essay answers (hand-written because my professor is a dinosaur and wouldn’t let us type and submit electronically).

·         At work I completed 2 presentation slide decks for the CEO consisting of 28 power-point slides.  I wonder why she finds what I have to say so interesting :P

·         I attended 2 social functions – a group dinner with former colleagues from The Limited and a “spouse” happy hour with work peeps which Anissa attended.  I think this was the first time Anissa was back in Reynoldsburg since her short stint at McGraw Hill.  It took her about an hour to get from her work to mine, but it was still a lot of fun J

·         Drove enough the last 5 days to go through the 16-ish gallons of gas in my car.  Not cool.

So what’s on tap for the weekend?  While new classes do start back next week, I don’t have anything to complete for them (yet).  So I have big plans to relax and catch up on sleep.  My family knows I am a sleeper, so if any of you are reading this you know how painful it is for me to be consistently running on 5-6 hours of sleep.  Also, tomorrow Anissa and I are going to the OSU-Rutgers game with her Aunt and Uncle who came in from New Jersey.  I am very excited and have been looking forward to this for months!  To cap off this entry, I am predicting a Buckeye victory with a score of 41-24!  O-H!

5 Things I Take for Granted

The last several weeks have been very hectic for me.  I have been struggling to get everything done without rushing through or forgetting things; at the same time, I know I need to allow myself the luxury of slowing down and relaxing once in a while.  In an effort to shift my mindset, this week I tried to think through a few things I take for granted, and to recognize some positive things I often look past.

1.       Recently my cruise control button in my car broke.  I didn’t realize how much I relied on it until it was gone.  Now that it’s back, I am so thankful to have that feature in my car.  Given that I spend 2+ hours in my car on school days, it’s nice to be able to take the foot off the gas once in a while.  I also forgot how hard it can be to maintain a consistent speed without that feature.

2.       Until this weekend, we haven’t really had much rain for a while.  And that means the grass isn’t growing and therefore doesn’t need mowed.  With lots of weekend commitments in September and October, this is a real blessing.  Thanks for the extra 45 minutes every Saturday Mother Nature!

3.       I had a few appointments this month that made me so thankful for early or late hours.  I was able to get to the dentist, car shop (twice), and get a consultation on my gutters without shortening my work day.  Thank goodness for flexibility in scheduling and extended service hours!

4.       One of my classes this week let out about 30 minutes early.  I was able to get home earlier than expected and actually made it to the gym that night.  This NEVER happens on school days when I usually leave the house at 7am for work and get home from class at 10pm.  I am definitely grateful for any chance to sneak in even a 20 minute workout.

5.       Sometimes I fail to appreciate how great it is to have a job that accommodates a demanding class schedule.  In hindsight, I am pretty lucky to have a team that supports me and understands why this degree is worth pursuing.  I see what other students go through and I have it pretty good J

Oldies Tribute

10 Songs in Under 30 Minutes

Get ready for a journey back in time!  Friday at work I spent a lot of time listening to music on Pandora.  Unsure of what I was in the mood for, I kept changing my station.  Finally I landed on an Oldies station and it kept me happy all afternoon.  So here’s a confession – I love Oldies.  I am talking 1950s-1970s Oldies.  As I was listening to the station, I kept getting disappointed with how short the songs all were.  Fortunately, there is so much good music in that genre that I was always excited to hear what was next.  So I thought I’d share some of the great Oldies that came up, 10 songs that can be listened to in less than 30 minutes.

1.       Sugar, Sugar – The Archies – This is one of my favorites!

2.       Earth Angel – The Temptations (is that the correct original artist?)

3.       Dream Lover – Bobby Darin

4.       Walk Like a Man – The Four Seasons – This reminded me of going to see Jersey Boys with Anissa and her family a couple years ago.  What a treat – such an amazing show!

5.       The Twist – Chubby Checker

6.       The Loco-Motion – Little Eva – Just a funny song!

7.       Yakety Yak – The Coasters – This takes me back to when I was a little kid living in Cleveland.  I remember cruising with my sisters and Aunt Shelley in her Astro Van and rocking out to this song and Jerry Lee Lewis’ Great Balls of Fire.  Some of my fondest memories of living in Cleveland.

8.       All I Have to Do is Dream – Everly Brothers – I have a random connection with this song.  My sisters were obsessed with the movie Lady Bugs and I am pretty sure this song is in there.  Every time I hear it I think of that terrible movie.

9.       Be My Baby – The Ronettes – I don’t know why I do, but I love this song.  A great example of that Oldies sound I love.

10.   In the Still of the Night – The Five Satins –We sang this song one year in high school choir and I have enjoyed it ever since.  So great!

Not a comprehensive list, but some great tunes and a great way to get through a Friday afternoon after a long week.

Groupwork

Warning – here comes another rant about Ohio State.  And for all you haters of OSU football, don’t get too excited.  This is another post about the Working Professional MBA program (WPMBA).

As part of Ohio State’s conversion from quarters to semesters (which happened 2 years ago!), the WPMBA program somehow got stretched from a 2.5 year program to a 3+ year program.  Now, many students like me are taking 3 classes per term vs. the previous standard of 2 just to stay on pace to graduate in under 3 years.  Having that extra class makes the program’s focus of group-based projects even more unmanageable.  The basic fact is that we are in the WPMBA programs because we demand flexibility in our learning, have special needs given our desire to continue working full time, and many people have spouses and children they would like to see on occasion :P

A couple weeks ago I had a back-and-forth with a professor about his policy of randomly assigning members of a 5-person group for a term-long project.  I raised my concerns which he acknowledged (and actually boiled up to the Faculty Advisor), but held to his policy.

So here’s why I, as a customer of Ohio State, am displeased.  I am taking 3 classes right now, each of which has at least 1 term-long project involving 3-4 other group members.  With this one class forcing a random assignment of group members, I now have 10 other group members to work with over the next 2 months (vs. being able to choose my own group and getting some overlap of members who are in the same 3 classes as me).  With 3 of 7 nights of the week consumed by class, and the other 2 weeknights fairly off limits for either working out, relaxing, or taking care of errands, that leaves 2 weekend days a week for coordinating the schedules of 10 people who have seemingly endless conflicts in their schedules.  Even if you can get a group of 5 to agree on a time, you still have 2 other groups to try and coordinate with.  It’s about impossible.

What’s my point?  I need an administrative assistant for this degree!  I am getting really frustrated with the program and the fact that they treat us WPMBA students as if we are full-timers.  I’m not saying I deserve special breaks.  But something like the random assignment of groups, or forcing groups to be as large as 5-8 people, are incredibly non-accommodating for a program that is supposed to be specifically designed to accommodate working professionals.  And it’s not a single-case problem.  This has been persistent for the almost 2 years I’ve been in this program.

Okay, rant is over.  Kent out.

First Week Back to School

First Week Back to School

This week was the first week back at Ohio State for my MBA program.  I should be graduating in May, so I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.  But it’s going to take some hard work to get there, including 3 nights a week of 6-9:15pm classes from now until May, and many hours of groupwork on Saturdays and Sundays for the foreseeable future.  I forgot how exhausting it is; I don’t think I’ve been this tired since the day after my wedding.  And unfortunately, I don’t have a sweet vacation right around the corner.

This week flew by and felt so manic, so I thought I’d recap some of the highlights, of course only highlighting those that can be quantified.

Starting with Sunday.  Anissa and I ran 5 miles.  We haven’t run that far in a long time, but we both felt great afterward.  Out of curiosity I went back to my running log (it’s an excel spreadsheet, duh!) to see how long it has been since I ran that far.  Turns out it was almost a year ago.  It had been 310 days since I ran at least 5 miles.  It made me feel nostalgic for the days of half and full marathons.  One day I’ll get back to it, but for now 5 miles will put a big smile on my face.

Monday was my first class back at Ohio State.  Let me clarify that Ohio State didn’t officially start classes until Wednesday.  However, about 2 weeks ago they realized that Monday 9/1 is a holiday (you know, that thing called Labor Day) and that they had not made enough sessions for the Monday classes with the way they set up the academic calendar.  I’m not sure how a major university misses something like that.  So lucky me, I got to go back 2 days early unexpectedly.  The bummer of the day, though, was getting from work to campus.  On a good day I can get there in 30-40 minutes.  On Monday, it took over an hour.  Fortunately I had enough foresight to leave extra early and to also stop at Tim Horton’s on my way, so I had a bagel and iced coffee to keep me comfortable in the car.  That day, including my commute to work, to school, and then back home, I spent just shy of 2 hours, or 120 minutes in the car.  Add my work hours and the in-class hours, it makes for a very long start to the week.

Tuesday was a day of no classes.  I got home from work at a good time, got in a run with Anissa (just 3 miles this time), and then we made omelets for dinner.  One of the things I love about not living alone is that I can actually get through a carton of eggs before they expire (and I don’t have to buy the weirdo 6-packs of eggs).  If we eat eggs 3 times a month, we get through them all.  And we are that uninventive of cooks that we actually eat scrambled eggs or omelets more than 3 times a month.

Wednesday.  More class.  More time in the car.  Enough said.

Thursday.  More class.  Except this time on my way to class, an accident blocked the entire interstate going my direction.  I quickly diverted to another direction hoping to still get to class on time.  Turns out I was screwed either way.  It took me well over an hour to get to class.  It just baffles me that in a city the size of Columbus with a 2013 estimated MSA  (metropolitan statistical area) population of just under 2 million (good enough for only 32nd largest in the U.S.), and what I consider to be a fairly decent infrastructure, it still takes me that long to travel only 18 miles.  Sure, it’s peak traffic time when I have to go.  But I’m going into the city, not leaving it.  I am actually against traffic when I go to OSU.  Let’s just say people need to stop shitting the bed and crashing their cars.  Because mentally I cannot afford to be left alone in my car for that many hours every week.

Friday.  Alas, sweet sweet Friday!  Looking ahead to a 3-day weekend and getting out of work a bit early just puts my mind to rest.  Yes, I have hundreds of pages of thick, heavy academic reading to complete.  Yes, I have a tons of stuff to do around the house.  But I can sleep 8 hours a night for 3 nights in a row.  I can eat 3 square meals at an actual table for the next 3 days.  And I can spend 12 hours sitting on my couch in scrubs watching football on Saturday.  Hallelujah!

There you have it, my week by the numbers.  Let me tell you, putting it in written form is almost therapeutic.  I may be ready for bed by 7pm tonight J

Honeymoon and Reading

Honeymoon and Reading

Well it’s been almost a month since my last post, which was the day before my wedding.  Everything went so perfectly the day I married Anissa; we couldn’t have dreamed of anything better!  This post will give you a little insight into the honeymoon, but I’ll do a full “wedding by the numbers” post later this month.

For the honeymoon, we first went to Disney World in Orlando, FL.  We ran ourselves ragged for 3 days and nights (and by ragged I mean the first day consisted of almost 18 straight hours in the parks).  After Disney, we left for Cancun where we stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach in Riviera Maya.  It was the perfect sequel to our honeymoon – seven days of sun on the beach.  It never rained a single drop the whole time we were in Mexico – talk about luck!  While in Mexico, Anissa and I decided we wanted to stay at the pool or the beach and not do any of the excursions like kayaking, snorkeling, etc.  And we did just that!

During our lazy days poolside and beachside, I rediscovered how much I love to read.  A few years back Anissa bought me a kindle and I started to read a lot (I’ve never really been a reader).  Then I had a year or so hiatus from reading with school reading dominating my life.  To have time to read on the honeymoon was so nice.  So here are some fast numbers on what I read:

·         I read 2 books - “Match Made in Heaven” by Robert Mitchell and “The First Phone Call from Heaven” by Mitch Albom.  I realized the last book I read before these was “Heaven in For Real” and it made me realize I might have a subconscious obsession #heaven

·         My favorite part about the Kindle is that is shows you how far along you are in percentage terms.  It gives me a great sense of accomplishment every time I look at it.  However, it deters me from reading long books because I hate reading 4 pages and not seeing my % complete go up.

·         I started 3 other books, but stopped reading them because they didn’t move fast enough for me.  I tend to like non-fiction or meaning-of-life/moral-of-the-story fiction (like anything written by Mitch Albom) and those tend to be on the shorter side.

·         I am a slow reader – I used to try to pace myself at 1 page every 60 seconds.  Then I realized I wasn’t able to sustain that and really read everything.  Plus, I tend to go back a reread certain portions of the book and that slows me down.

School starts back in 2 weeks so we’ll see if I can squeeze in another book before I start school reading.  Any suggestions?

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

This is it – the final 5!!!

5.  Monday 7/7 – Today I am happy for go-with-the-flow people, especially at work.  Most of you reading this probably know that I am not very go-with-the-flow.  I hate playing things by ear, I love to plan and be prepared.  Well we all knew today would be a manic day at work, with tons of stuff due and things having to go perfectly just to get it done.  Things did not go perfectly.  But everyone’s attitude stayed positive and it reminded me how much of a difference that can make, especially on a day like today.

4. Tuesday 7/8 – On the drive home from work today I saw a company (I think it was Safe Auto) flying a HUGE American flag.  There are a few select places on I-270 that have giant flags, and it just makes me smile when I see them.  Today in particular, the sky was bright blue with cotton-white clouds, and the red, white and blue just popped against that backdrop.

3.  Wednesday 7/9 – Today Anissa and I hit the moment in wedding planning where we actually felt close to completion.  The wheels are in motion and we are so relieved that it’s all coming together.  We went out to eat without even worrying about getting any tasks done.  It’s been months since we’ve been able to do that!

2.  Thursday 7/10 – Today has been fun – left work early and don’t return for 18 days!  Both the Casciato and Kent parents made it in town (and so did my little sister Laura who is just following my mom everywhere she goes – seriously, get a life Laura, you’re 24).  We were able to relax in the early afternoon and then get in some quality time with our families.

1.  Friday 7/11 – So here we are, the end of my 50 days of happy.  And I am so happy because today we officially kick off our wedding events.  Everyone gets in town, we have the rehearsal followed by dinner, and then we get married tomorrow.  And I am so excited I can hardly contain myself!

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…These are going to be short and sweet.

10.  Wednesday 7/2 – Listening to Pandora again today at work.  They played some old Blink 182 – took me back.  Good stuff!

9. Thursday 7/3 – Left work at 3pm today.  Those 2 hours make such a huge difference – love the gift of time!

8.  Friday 7/4 – Ah, Independence Day!  What a great holiday!  Tonight, Anissa and I lit sparklers and literally ran up and down our street with them.  It felt good to act like a kid!

7.  Saturday 7/5 – All morning and afternoon on the 4th, Anissa and I were re-staining our deck.  Today I was so sore it was actually hard to walk at times.  It felt good, though.  I like the physical reminder that I kicked some total ass the day before!

6.  Sunday 7/6 – We hit up church early this morning.  Every time we go to the 7:30am mass, we see this very old couple.  The woman has a hard time walking, and they always walk up to Communion arms linked.  It’s really touching.

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

15.  Friday 6/27 – My mom and youngest sister Laura came into Columbus for the weekend (and my dad arrived later this evening).  The three of us plus Anissa and Maddy went to BJ’s Brewhouse for dinner and just pigged out (and were later joined by Carolyn and Michael).  We got the super huge appetizer platter plus the corn fritters appetizer.  I indulged in some brews, followed by deep dish pizza.  It was gluttonous and delicious, and we had a great time just shooting the shit.

14. Saturday 6/28 – Almost every year my dad and I play in a golf scramble in Cleveland to raise money for a charity in honor of a deceased friend and former colleague of his.  It’s been a couple years since I’ve been and boy did I have a good time today.  I love the outing because the competition isn’t super intense; it’s just fun!  This year my younger sisters Amy and Laura joined our foursome and it was a lot of fun playing with them and my dad.

13.  Sunday 6/29 – My parents stayed at our house this weekend, and we all got up around 9am today.  We bummed around a little bit, and then kicked ourselves into high gear around 10am.  My mom helped us make some great landscaping changes that we’ve been wanting to do (mind you, she also stripped and cleaned our deck BY HERSELF on Saturday – thanks mom!).  We then piled in the car for 12:15pm mass at St. Paul.  A good morning I’d say – productive AND relaxing!

12.  Monday 6/30 – I had a new analyst start on my team today.  When I was an auditor for KPMG I really enjoyed onboarding new staff – I loved the teaching and mentoring part of my job.  This was my first taste of it at Victoria’s Secret and I have really enjoyed getting the new guy up to speed.  I can tell he’s going to do very well in our group.

11.  Tuesday 7/1 – Anissa and I have been having some troubles with our lawn mower (among other things – check out her blog about it here: http://sciatosrunningrecord.blogspot.com/).  We went to Lowe’s last night in a bit of panic as our lawn has become unsightly, at best.  You see, what happened was that yesterday we went to the gym and on the way called Lowe’s maintenance.  By the time we were parked at the gym, we were convinced we needed to go to Lowe’s right away and just fix the damn mower.  So we went in our work out clothes and just skipped the gym.  Regardless of how gross you think it is, we both wore the same workout clothes to the gym this evening because they were still clean.  Our next stop after the gym today?  Lowe’s, again.  To pick up more shit to try and fix our mower.  And yes, we saw the same guy we chatted with the day before.  And yes we were wearing the same damn clothes he saw us in the day before.  But you know what?  We both got a kick out of it.  There we were, pretending like there’s nothing weird about wearing the same clothes 2 days in a row, or the fact that we couldn’t solve our problem the first time into the store.  Cheers to laughing it off!

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

20.  Sunday 6/22 – A few days prior to today, our washer unexpectedly died.  This happened on a Thursday night before going out of town over the weekend.  When we got back this evening, my sister Carolyn and her boyfriend Michael were nice enough to let us crash their evening and do some laundry at their house.  It was such a huge relief to be able to get some much-needed laundry done before our new washer arrived – the week would have been a little rough otherwise!  Plus, it was great just to hang out at their place and catch up.

19. Monday 6/23 – As I mentioned above, we were out of town all weekend.  With the washer fiasco, we just didn’t have time to get to the grocery store and set ourselves up for the week.  Lucky me – Anissa is off work and was able to get our shopping done Monday during the day.  I came home and she had gotten fresh produce, chicken, cereal, everything we needed for the week.  It put a big smile on my face when I got home and saw it.

18.  Tuesday 6/24 – We have had some unsettled weather this week.  Today we had some really heavy rain and thunderstorms.  I got caught driving home in some of it.  Sure, it was a little scary.  But everyone actually slowed down and was behaving well on the roads.  The whole time I kept thinking how incredible the rain was.  I still am not sure why, but extreme weather is so cool to me.  Sure enough it rained and rained and rained all night.  There’s nothing quite like the sound of rain on the roof to lull you to sleep!

17.  Wednesday 6/25 – Anissa and I both really enjoy Christmas including all the related music.  On my way home from work today I couldn’t find anything on the radio.  So I switched to a random CD in my car.  It was the Polar Express soundtrack.  Yes, it is June and I still have Christmas CDs loaded in my car.  And yes, it made me happy and I listened to it all the way home.

16.  Thursday 6/26 – I noticed a lot of people out and about in my neighborhood today.  People were walking, biking, jogging, mowing, trimming, and just sitting on their porch.  This was just the kind of neighborhood we were looking for when we were house hunting last year, and I am so happy with where we landed J

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5 (a day late, whoops)…

25.  Tuesday 6/17 – Summer is finally showing up this week, with temperatures pushing into the 90s.  After I got home from the gym this evening I spent some time in the yard watering our plants and flowers.  I take a lot of pride in our yard and it felt good to have some time to maintain it.  Yahoo for having a yard!

24. Wednesday 6/18 – I work in one of several buildings at my company’s campus, and there are security guards that monitoring the traffic in and out of the campus.  Every morning (including this morning) I drive in and one of the guards waves.  Hundreds of people come and go from this campus each day, and the guards are always there waving and greeting everyone.  I really appreciate that.  It sets a good tone for the day.  Sometimes it really is the small things.

23.  Thursday 6/19 – I went to the gym today and I noticed a couple of extremely large women working on some of the machines.  I could tell they were trying to figure out how the machines worked, and what settings were appropriate for them.  I remember my first few trips to a gym, and how awkward I felt trying to understand the movements on each machine, and how much resistance I could handle (and all the while wondering who was watching and judging me).  I still feel that way sometimes.  So I had to give it to these ladies.  I know it took them a lot of courage to come to the gym and start to figure it all out.  Props to them, and thanks for inspiring me.

22.  Friday 6/20 – A few things made me really happy today.  Anissa and I are traveling to Iowa for a cousin’s wedding.  I was very happy that I could take a half day from work without using my PTO.  It made our travel arrangements so much easier knowing I had that flexibility.  What also made me happy was the drive.  Yes, the Midwest is covered in farmland.  But it is really quite breathtaking at times.  Large rivers, valleys, rolling fields, and picturesque skies.  On our last hour of the drive, the sun was setting and it was just incredible.  I couldn’t stop staring.  What could have been a terrible and boring drive actually turned out to be quite pleasant.

21.  Saturday 6/21 – Alas, the purpose of our travels was to see Anissa’s cousin Rebekah tie the knot.  So many things made me happy today.  But I think what struck a chord with me today was watching everyone’s excitement at getting to see each other.  Most of the cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. don’t get to see each other all that often.  I really enjoyed catching up with everyone, as well as watching everyone have such a good time with each other.

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

30.  Thursday 6/12 – I went to gym tonight.  There is a “Costume Vault” or year-round “Halloween Express” or something of the like in the strip center, and they have the creepiest mannequins dressed in costumes all along the front windows.  Tonight when I went by the store to get to the gym, the mannequins were lined up holding signs that spelled “W-I-L-L  Y-O-U  M-A-R-R-Y   M-E”.  I would never propose in that way, but I’m sure some lady did like it, because the next day the mannequins’ signs spelled “S-H-E   S-A-I-D   Y-E-S”.  It put a smile on my face, wondering about how this guy had planned out this special proposal, and then it got me thinking about when I proposed to Anissa.  J

29.  Friday 6/13 – Friday the 13th and a full moon!?  Watch out!  On particularly quiet days at work, I often listen to Pandora on my phone.  I’m still old school in that I only listen to personally-cultivated radio stations inspired by very specific artists.  Today, my hip hop/pop-Latin blend station (featuring Pitbull most of the time) was just firing on all cylinders.  It put me in a great mood and made it easier to stick around the whole afternoon even though many others were taking half days.

28.  Saturday 6/14 – Today was my bachelor party.  I had a blast hanging out at the Clippers game and then hitting up my favorite Arena District bar (R Bar) for the rest of the evening.  Nothing wild or crazy, just a really fun night out with the guys!

27.  Sunday 6/15 – Tonight Anissa and I went to Yabo’s for some tacos for dinner.  We were just enjoying ourselves and then the song “Simply Irresistible” by Robert Palmer came on in the restaurant.  Anissa had never seen the music video before, and I had a lot of fun watching her reactions to it.  If you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor and go to YouTube right now.  (beware, some parts of the video may make you uncomfortable so be careful who’s around when you watch it!)

26.  Monday 6/16 – Today Anissa and I had time after I got home from work to run 2 errands, go to the gym, hit up Kroger for some fresh produce, and cook ourselves a tasty and healthy dinner.  Having the time to do all that, and still have time to relax the rest of the evening is invaluable.  I wish every week night was like this!

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

35.  Saturday 6/7 – Tonight was Anissa’s bachelorette party which meant I had a night to do whatever I wanted.  A few years ago I read the book Moneyball (great read for all you nerdy baseball lovers), and then for my birthday that year Anissa got me the movie.  I had never watched it, so that’s what I decided to do tonight.  I don’t know what it is about baseball movies, but I just love them.  So that brought me happiness.  A quiet night in, just watching a movie that turned out to be quite good.

34.  Sunday 6/8 – Today was kind of a dreary day with off and on rain all day.  Anissa and I had little to do (or at least nothing time sensitive).  We actually were able to take a nap in the middle of the day.  I used to nap every day in college (in fact, I built my class schedule in a way that allowed for a nap every day around 2 or 3.).  We put on some golf and just snoozed until we woke up naturally.  It was wonderful!

33.  Monday 6/9 – I ran 4 miles today.  I haven’t run that far in one day since the middle of March.  Time is a precious commodity this past year.  It felt very good to complete 4 miles – it almost made me wish I had the time to train for another marathon.  Almost.

32.  Tuesday 6/10 – It was a quiet day at work today.  I love what I do, and I work for a great company.  But the quiet, predictable days are few and far between lately.  It made me happy to have some time organize my thoughts and tasks, and put some real think time into what I was doing.

31.  Wednesday 6/11 – Today, Anissa and I finished our last super menial task for the wedding.  All things left to do are fun and interesting.  Tomorrow marks the 1-month mark until we get married, and that makes me VERY happy J

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

40.  Monday 6/2 – Sunshine!  I was so happy for a break in the weather that was just long enough for Anissa and I to get in our practice session/engagement pictures with our wedding photographer.  And I was very happy with how efficient and professional our photographer was.  She’s pretty awesome.

39.  Tuesday 6/3 – I am happy for guy in the car behind me at the red light just recklessly abandoning all car decorum by flailing around like a fish out of water to whatever song he was listening to.  It reminded me how much I love rocking out in the car.  My earliest memory of doing this was in my Aunt Shelley’s and Uncle Mike’s van when I was 4 or 5.  The song of choice?  Great Balls of Fire!  Such a great memory!

38.  Wednesday 6/4 – Nerd alert!  Learning makes me happy.  A lot of people complain or poke fun at the “touchy-feely” training they have to attend for work.  I really like those kinds of things.  I got to step away from my desk for 2 full days this week to go to a training class, and I totally geeked out over the theory, group sharing, and team-building activities.

37.  Thursday 6/5 – I am happy when I run outside.  I definitely don’t do it enough.  Today the high temperature was 72 with virtually no humidity.  And to top it off, the sky was picture perfect.  Bright blue with the whitest clouds.  It reminded me of the movie “The Truman Show” when he gets to the edge of the set and you see that the world around him was a painted set.  That’s what the sky looked like.  Oh, and I could see the moon at 5pm too.  We live in a pretty cool world.

36.  Friday 6/6 – Pizza!  The fat kid in me just perks up when I know I’m having pizza for dinner.  And I don’t really discriminate.  Take-out, froze, bagel bites, pizza rolls, at-home english muffin homemade pizzas.

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

On to next 5…

45.  Wednesday 5/28 – While I hate being the center of attention, I do enjoy the texts, calls, and facebook messages on my birthday.  It’s nice to know people are thinking about you!

44.  Thursday 5/29 – I am happy for the gift of time.  I got out of class early, and that extra hour just makes such a huge difference.  And it was my class until 8/27, so I get the gift of time for the next 3 months!  Such a relief, especially with the wedding coming up here shortly.

43.  Friday 5/30 – Weekends bring me happiness.  It’s a chance to catch your breath, reset, and even steal some time for yourself.  Anissa and I met our wedding DJ (also a personal and family friend) for dinner and it was nice to just be away from the house, school, and work.

42.  Saturday 5/31 – I am happy for late-evening chats.  Anissa and I stayed up late talking with her parents about anything and everything.  At one point we were laughing so hard we had tears in our eyes.  Good times.

41.  Sunday 6/1 – Going to church brings me joy.  The last month has been a whirlwind and it’s been so long since we’ve been able to attend mass at our home parish.  We went tonight and it was a breath of fresh air.  Familiar sights and sounds, and familiar faces.  Sometimes routine is a good thing J

50 Things that make me happy

50 Things that make me happy

Today’s post is brought to you by the number 50.  I am stealing the general concept from some people I’ve seen doing it out there.  I am going to share 50 sources of happiness, one per day until my wedding day.  To spare you the anxiety of checking back every day, I will do 10 posts of 5, so be sure to check back every 5th day!

50.  Friday 5/23 - I am happy for Anissa’s end of the school year and for the start of “summer hours” at work for me.  On Friday Anissa had early-release on the last day of school, and I got to leave work at 12pm without taking personal time off.  Hello happy hour and an early start to a long weekend!

49.  Saturday 5/24 - I am happy for the weather and getting to relax and catch up with my little sister Laura on a lazy Saturday afternoon.  We had a pretty relaxed morning of coffee with Anissa and breakfast with my parents, followed by a few hours just sitting in the sun and shooting the shit (accompanied with a mid-afternoon vodka-soda).  Then we both dozed off while watching the Indians game.  What a great way to spend an afternoon!

48.  Sunday 5/25 - My parents bring me happiness.  I’ve gotten to see them twice this month which is a rare treat for me.  What a roller-coaster life has been for them the last couple years.  I’ve truly enjoyed watching them grow and learn, even beyond their already-infinite wisdom.  I feel loved and inspired every day because of them.  (side note – thanks to my sister Maureen, brother-in-law Ryan, and their future son/my future nephew for giving the family good reason to get together and celebrate!).

47.  Monday 5/26 – Planning my wedding brings me happiness.  Sure, there is stress involved when you are trying to orchestrate a major event with important details.  But through the whole process Anissa and I have found ways to have fun doing it.  Today, we did planning at Buffalo Wild Wings.  How can you be stressed with wings and beer?!

46.  Tuesday 5/27 – School brings me happiness.  I’m taking a pretty interesting class right now that revolves around inventive problem-solving.  It’s fairly “out-of-the-box” thinking for an MBA course, and it’s refreshing in that way.  While the nights are long and my weekends are usually consumed with schoolwork, I get a lot out of my program and I am fortunate to be able to continue my education.
